Under A Rock: Backyard Science

September 29, 2009

The girls are big bug fans. They will often come running into the house with a new and interesting specimen to be researched. So when I came across the books Under One Rock by Anthony D. Fredericks and Under A Stone by Jen Green, I knew we were in for an afternoon of creature inspecting fun! After we flipped through both books to get a glimpse of what we might discover, we headed out to the garden with our bug jars in hand to find some rocks to overturn. It was wonderful to see their reactions as they hit insect (and worm) jackpots! After letting their new-found friends crawl around on them for awhile, the girls carefully loaded up their bug jars and brought them inside to learn more about them. Both books provided a lot of useful information and the girls were able to easily identify the insects they found. We also did a bit of research on the internet and decided to make a digital field guide of our own.

Happy Hunting!
