Shared Experiences: Nature Sketches

Nature Drawing
While planning learning experiences, based on my daughters’ interests, is one of my favorite pastimes, as they get older I am finding that they enjoy engaging in many of the same things that I enjoy (or have always wanted to try) as an adult. We are starting to take part in many different types of shared experiences where we are learning side by side.

I have been intrigued by the work of Jill Bliss for sometime and thought it would be fun to surprise the girls by bringing home three copies of her journal, Drawing Nature. Jill walks us through the process of beginning to see the natural world with new eyes. She offers just enough instruction to nurture successful attempts at drawing, but not so much that all of our sketches turn out exactly the same. It was really fun incorporating her signature little marks into our renditions of our backyard leaves and flowers.

It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon! I am looking forward to adding to our journals throughout the changing seasons…
