Let’s Make Butter
Do you remember when you first realized that there was magic to be made in the kitchen? Maybe for you it was the first time you watched a meringue being made. Or it could’ve been when you saw bread dough double in size for the first time.
There is a sense of magical potential that draws children into the kitchen. I have three daughters and every time I’m in the kitchen, my girls are glued to my side. I’m pretty sure every child I’ve ever met is the same! They love to discover how things are made, and cooking is a lovely balance of creativity and science. Spending time with them in the kitchen is one of my favorite things – sure, it can be messy – but their enthusiasm is infectious!
If you’d like to try out some kitchen wizardry with your children, I think one of the best things you can begin with is the simple activity of making butter. For me, as a child, this was the recipe that stood out as being a process of pure alchemy!
In the video below my girls (Ava, Lola and Belle) make a little kitchen magic by turning cream into butter. It really is a super-easy and fun recipe to try and I hope you’ll give it a go!

Adorable!
This is so so sweet. I didn’t know it’s that easy to make butter! And the video is great! Love it!
so cool, I didnt realise it was that easy!
Sophia & I are going to try it out in the holidays
[...] My first post went live last Thursday. Here’s a little peek at the video we made… (I think if you’re reading this via email there’s a chance it won’t display so you may have to come on to the website to view it??) I’ll be sure to let you know whenever I post on Playful Learning, but if you’re not familiar with Mariah’s lovely blog, I encourage you to go and have a look. It really is full of wonderful, inspirational and practical ideas for engaging and playing with your little ones. [...]
So lovely!
My teacher did this with our class when we were 6. It was magical – and has been a vivid and happy memory! Your video is absolutely gorgeous – what lovely children you have!
Hi Alice – Me too! I had the same memorable experience experience… Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Alice! When I was about 9, we studied Victorian England and as a part of the study we made butter – and I remember being truly amazed at how simple it was and just as you say, how magical! I’ve thought of butter making in that way ever since.
How fabulous! And your girls did a spectacular job! It looks like a fun project to do.
