Handwriting Practice

February 4, 2010

My five-year-old daughter came home from school the other day and could not wait to show me how she was learning to write her letters. I was thrilled because her school uses the Handwriting Without Tears program, which I think is one of the best. It was so wonderful to be able to sit quietly and listen while she taught me how to write capital letters.

Materials
Alphabet Chart
• Small slate chalkboard (HWT sells a nice one, but we found ours at a local toy store)
• Chalk
• Sponge cut into a one inch square
• Small bowl of water for cleaning sponge between letters
• Folded paper towel

Steps
1. Write the letter on the chalkboard using the alphabet chart as a model
2. Retrace the letter with your finger
3. Retrace the letter with a wet small square sponge (make sure to squeeze all of the water out first)
4. Retrace the letter with a folded paper towel
5. Write another letter and repeat steps 1-4

  1. [...] super-simple activity is to print out customized handwriting practice sheets and laminate them so that children can use dry erase markers to practice writing again and again. [...]

Hi!  I went to your recommended site, handwritingworksheets.com and tried to download the program, and got several warnings not to download..my co teacher downloaded it anyway and it was a total sham.  No worksheets.  Thought you would like to know.

Hi Melissa – Thanks for the head’s up. This site has changed a bit since I wrote this post. If you scroll down on the page a bit to the part that reads. “Our orignal handwriting practice worksheet maker is still available below,” you should still be able to create custom worksheets.
